Nicholas Holtzman, M.S., O.D.

Dr. Holtzman graduated with a bachelors and master degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He worked as an exercise specialist in cardiac rehabilitation and as a Clinical Allergy Specialist. He explored optometry as an optometric technician and became enthused with the specialty.He received his doctor of Optometry from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, College of Optometry. Hewas elected Trustee of the American Optometric Student Association and selected to be a teaching assistant for Anatomy, Physiology and Ocular Disease. He was awarded the “Dr. Frank D. Fontana Scholarship” emphasizing excellence in clinical patient care. For this scholarship, he competed against students from 6 optometry colleges. He was awarded Excellency in Advocacy of Optometry from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

Dr. Holtzman is particularly interested in Dry Eye Care and ocular surface disease. Ocular muscle problems and advanced contact lens treatment.

Dr.Holtzman is a member of the American Optometric Association and the Illinois Optometric Association.

When Dr. Holtzman isn’t practicing optometry, he is devoted to his wife Courtney and two children, August and Heidi.

Keith Lyston, O.D.

Dr. Keith Lyston is our most recent addition to the practice, joining in May 2025. He is a graduate of the University of Missouri – St. Louis School of Optometry and has been practicing for over 20 years. He became interested in optometry when he himself was having problems with his contact lenses and was helped by a very skilled optometrist. During his years as an optometry student, he trained with Dr. Becherer during one of his externship rotations. His special interests include contact lens fitting and glaucoma care. He is an active member of the St. Louis Optometric Society.

P.Douglas Becherer, O.D., F.A.A.O.

Dr. Becherer joined his father in practice. The Becherer’s grandfather started the practice in downtown Belleville in 1920. The practice has always been a family owned practice caring for your family’s vision needs. As a privately owned practive, we do what is best for our patients and not what is best for some corporation.

Dr. Becherer and his wife Carla have 2 adult children. He received his B.A. from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and his doctorate from Southern College of Optometry. He is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry. He has chaired many committees for both the American Academy of Optometry and the American Optometric Association. He is a Fellow in the prestigious National Academy of Practice which is comprised of 150 doctors from each of the ten health care fields.

Dr Becherer is an adjunct Full Professor of the University of Missouri, College of Optometry and Illinois College of Optometry. He is an adjunct Professor of Southern College of Optometry and a adjunct clinical Instructor at Washington University, School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Becherer has trained almost 100 externs in his practice.

Dr. Becherer has published (click to read titles of publications) and lectured extensively, presenting 130 lectures at major conferences. He has completed over 60 clinical research investigations of new products leading to FDA approval. He has presented to the FDA panel as an expert. Due to his expertise on contact lens care, he has been interviewed 50 times on T.V., radio and newsprint. Dr. Becherer holds patents for specialized contact lens and was a founder of a specialty contact lens company that creates extremely high powered contact lenses. These custom lenses offer patients normal functional vision not attained with glasses.

Dr. Becherer was elected Chairman of the Contact Lens and Cornea Section of the American Optometric Assocaiation. He was elected President of the Heart of America Contact Lens Society and was honored to be the Optometrist of the Year. The A.O.A. bestowed on Dr. Becherer the “Legend in Contact Lens” award and the first “ Dr. Frank D Fontana Award” for excellence in clinical patient care in 2020.

Dr. Becherer recently completed serving 8 years on the State of Illinois Board of Optometry. The purpose of the state board is to protect the citizens of Illinois.

Dr. Becherer has been on the Board of Directors or the Advisory Board of Directors of UMB Bank, SpecialEyes Contact Lens Co., Wesley-Jessen Contact Lens Co., Ciba Vision, Paragon Contact Lens Co., Konan Medical Equipment Co., and Tomey Medical Equipment Co.

Leisurely, he enjoys spending time with his family, especially his 3 grandchildren. He enjoys tennis, golf, snow skiing, boating and fishing.
